A Winter Wellness Retreat in BC that moves at a Slower Pace

A winter wellness retreat in BC has a slower, more spacious rhythm up here in the Larch Hills. Everything quiets down as the snow starts to gather — the cedar stands soften, the dry juniper ridges turn pale under the frost, and the whole forest seems to hold this calm that you feel the moment you step out of the car. Tin Poppy sits in the middle of all of this, a handmade collection of cabins tucked into 160 acres of shifting landscapes: ponds, wetlands, grassy openings beneath old fir trees, rocky outcrops, and those dry, sun-catching ridges that look almost golden on a clear winter afternoon. It’s a place where you can settle in without rushing, wander the trails with your dog, or simply take that slow breath you didn’t know you needed.

Forest Walks and Snowshoeing Right Outside your Cabin

The land changes as you move through it. One moment you’re in a cedar-hemlock pocket that feels sheltered and still, and then the trail opens onto firs spaced wide enough to let the winter light through. Our own on-site trails wind for about fourteen kilometres, all bird-inspired and easy to explore on foot or snowshoes. Guests walk these loops with their families, friends, or pets, letting the forest decide the pace. Winter seems to invite that — not the kind of dramatic adventure you plan weeks in advance, but the simple kind you fall into because the quiet nudges you toward it.

Nordic Skiing Just Minutes Away

Just ten minutes from the cabins, the Larch Hills Nordic trail system pulls a lot of people outdoors. It’s a huge network and one of the most-loved cross-country skiing spots in British Columbia. You can leave Tin Poppy with a thermos of something warm, stop at John’s Ski Shack for rentals or a quick tune-up, and be gliding through the trees before lunch. The five-kilometre lit loop at night is something else entirely — the tracks glowing gently under the lamps, the tall trees leaning in around you, and that crisp winter air that somehow wakes you up and calms you down at the same time. It’s one of the simplest ways to feel fully present in the season. If you’re craving a winter wellness retreat in BC, this part of the Okanagan feels like it was made for slow winter days

Cozy Cabins Built for Rest

Coming back to your off-grid cabin after time outdoors is part of the experience. Each space is its own little retreat, with vintage touches, soft lighting, king-size beds with warm duvets, and views that remind you you’re tucked right into the forest. Lavender Cabin is fully solar-powered with Wi-Fi, while the others lean more toward the off-grid quiet. People settle into different rhythms here — some ski or snowshoe all day, others stay close to the forest and take long walks or make tea and read. There’s no one way to spend time at Tin Poppy, and that’s what makes it feel like a true winter wellness retreat in BC.

Private Wood-Fired Saunas All Year

And then, always, there are the saunas. Every cabin has its own private wood-fired sauna, and the routine of lighting it becomes a small ritual on its own. You bring in the wood, listen for that first crackle, and feel the heat slowly build as the cedar walls warm. Saunas are available year-round — in spring and fall they’re incredibly peaceful, and in summer they’re lovely on cooler evenings as long as there’s no fire ban in effect. In winter, though, they’re exactly what most people look forward to after time on the trails. It’s quiet, grounding, and deeply relaxing in a way that reminds you how good simple things can feel.

Hand-Blended Sauna Oils from Local Landscapes

We keep our own hand-blended sauna oils in our onsite woodland boutique, and each blend is inspired by a place close to our hearts in the North Okanagan and Shuswap. Enderby Cliffs — dry, bright, shaped by juniper and fir. Mara Meadows — soft and wetland-scented, earthy in a way that feels rooted. And our Tin Poppy essence — lavender, pine, and the notes of the surrounding Larch Hills forest. A drop or two on the stones fills the sauna with the kind of aromatics that pair perfectly with winter: grounding, calm, and natural.

What I love most about winter at Tin Poppy is that it doesn’t ask anything dramatic of you. Whether you come for a ski weekend, a wellness-focused escape, or just a couple of quiet days with your dog in the snow, the forest, the saunas, and the cabins all have a way of meeting you where you are. Friends gather here for slow, restorative weekends. Families bring their pets to explore the trails. Solo guests come to read, rest, and breathe a little deeper.

A winter wellness retreat in BC doesn’t need to be complicated. Sometimes it’s just the forest, the snow, the quiet, a sauna, and a warm cabin waiting at the end of the day. That’s what winter here feels like — a gentle unfolding, a slower pace, and a kind of stillness you carry with you long after you’ve driven back down the hill.
